Surely at some point in your life you have worn a garment with polka dots, but do you know where the name of this important print in the fashion world comes from?

The origin of polka dots dates back to the 19th century, in the Bohemian Region (now the Czech Republic), where in 1830 a popular dance called “Polka” (meaning Polish woman) appeared. This dance became very famous throughout Europe, finally arriving in America, as a result of the large number of immigrants.

Although the name has Czech origin, Spanish Flamenco has a great influence on its spread. Flamenco dancers’ outfits are characterized by their typical black and white polka dots that accompany a red dress.

The Polka Dot style took hold in the United States in 1926 with the then Miss America, Norma Smallwood, posing in a polka dot swimsuit becoming a trend.

Two years later, in 1928, with the appearance of Minnie Mouse and her famous polka dot dress, the trend was reinforced. Some celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe and Bob Dylan have worn polka dot print on numerous occasions, making them their own style.

Polka dots never get old. The proof is in the recent collections of multiple fashion houses, which continue to bet on this style in their collections, such as Zara's limited "Dot Collection" launched in August 2021, where polka dots predominate.

LUNARES: EL ESTILO QUE SIEMPRE VUELVE

Una tendencia que nunca pasa de moda

Seguro que en algún momento de tu vida has usado una prenda con lunares. Pero tal vez, no sabes dónde surge el nombre de este estampado tan importante en el mundo de la moda.

El origen de los lunares se remonta al siglo XIX, en la Región de Bohemia (actual República Checa), donde en 1830 apareció un baile popular llamado “Polka” (que significa mujer polaca). Este baile se hizo muy famoso en toda Europa llegando finalmente a América, como consecuencia de la gran cantidad de inmigrantes.

A pesar de que el nombre tenga origen checo, el Flamenco español tiene una gran influencia en su difusión. Los trajes de las bailarinas de Flamenco se caracterizan por sus típicos lunares negros y blancos que acompañan a un vestido rojo.

El estilo de lunares, o Polka Dot en inglés, tomó fuerzas en Estados Unidos en 1926 con la entonces Miss América que posaba con un traje de baño de lunares convirtiéndose en tendencia. Dos años más tarde, en 1928, con la aparición de Minnie Mouse y su famoso vestido de lunares, se reforzó la tendencia. Algunas celebridades como Marilyn Monroe y Bob Dylan han llevado en numerosas ocasiones estampado de lunares, haciéndolos propio de su estilo.

Los lunares nunca pasan de moda, la prueba está en las recientes colecciones de múltiples casas de moda que siguen apostando por este estilo en algunas de sus prendas, como la colección limitada de Zara ”Dot Collection” lanzada en agosto de 2021, donde predominan los lunares.
